V-LAB Tabletop

Introducing V-LAB Tabletop

Beyond The Naked Eye

Objective Angular Analytics & LiDAR Validation in Advanced Coatings.

The V-Lab TableTop is a portable measurement system that captures the complete 3D visibility profile of any coating, for human vision, camera systems, and LiDAR sensors.

The Problem

Existing Tools Measure Color, Not Visibility

Multi-angle spectrophotometers measure color appearance and effect pigment behavior across multiple angles, but they don’t measure visibility.

They can’t tell you:

  • How bright a coating appears to the human eye at twilight
  • Whether an ADAS camera can reliably detect it
  • How much LiDAR signal it reflects

A color that looks stunning under showroom lights can become nearly invisible on curved fenders, doors, and hoods in low-light conditions, exactly when visibility matters most.

The result? No objective data on how coatings perform for safety-critical detection systems.

The Solution

V-LabTT: Complete 3D Visibility Analysis

The V-Lab TableTop measures coating visibility across five angles, from 6° to 64°, at two lighting conditions (100 Lux and 3 Lux), plus LiDAR reflectance.

This captures how coatings appear on the curved surfaces of real vehicles, from nearly perpendicular to nearly parallel viewing angles.

How It Works

1. Place Your Panel

Insert a standard test panel into the measurement chamber. The V-Lab TableTop’s controlled dark box eliminates ambient light interference.

2. Automated Scan

The system automatically captures:

  • Camera images at 5 angles under 100 Lux (dark overcast day)
  • Camera images at 5 angles under 3 Lux (civil twilight)
  • LiDAR scan at 5 angles using infrared wavelength

3. Instant Results

Within minutes, receive a complete Visibility Label report with:

  • A-E grades for all 5 visibility parameters
  • Numerical scores relative to Traffic White (RAL9016)
  • Captured images at each measurement angle
  • PDF report ready for customers

The Five Visibility Parameters

ParameterWhat It MeasuresWhy It Matters
Camera VisionBrightness for computer vision at 100 & 3 LuxADAS camera detection reliability
LiDAR VisibilityInfrared reflectance across all anglesAutonomous vehicle sensor mapping
Human VisibilityBrightness for human eye at 100 LuxDriver perception in low light
Full Object VisibilityVisibility of curved surfaces (outer 84%)Real-world 3D shape perception
Twilight VisibilityHuman visibility at 3 Lux (30 min after sunset)Safety at the most dangerous time

The Science

Peer-Reviewed Methodology

The V-Lab TableTop implements the 3D Point-of-View Visibility Model published in the SAE International Journal of Connected and Automated Vehicles:

“A 3D Visibility Label for Mobility Coatings: Enhancing Traffic Safety Through Color and Sensor Perception” DOI: 10.4271/12-09-02-0009

The methodology models any complex vehicle shape as a semi-sphere, divided into five concentric rings. Each ring represents a different viewing angle – and the outer rings (where surfaces curve away from the observer) account for the majority of visible surface area.
